Tomi Sushi was founded in 1954 in Niigata prefecture and has 14 branches in Japan. The climate in Niigata produces the well-known brand of rice, Koshihikari. Therefore it is not surprising that Tomi Sushi uses the rice from its hometown for all the sushi it serves in its 4 outlets in Singapore.

The 4 outlets in Singapore are found in Millenia Walk, Novena Square, Katong V Shopping Mall and Cuppage Road.  Tomi Sushi’s first outlet in Singapore was at PARCO in Millenia Walk. It then moved to its current location (Nihon Food Street) in Millenia Walk in 2015. This food street has 6 Japanese restaurants: Chabuton, Kurama Robatayaki and Yoi Sake Bar, Saboten, Sushi Murasaki, Tomi Sushi and Uma Uma.

One afternoon while looking for a place for lunch in Nihon Food Street, I stumbled upon Tomi Sushi as the menu looked interesting. The ambience of Tomi Sushi is simple and typically Japanese in decor with wooden partitions to give diners some privacy.

The set meals are value for money at Tomi Sushi. Besides the 3 set lunches, I also ordered the day’s special which is the Aburi Negishio Sushi (2 pieces for $15). The slice of fish tasted fresh with a smooth texture. I picked the Chef’s recommendations, namely, Osusume lunch ($45), and the Sushi Bento ($38) and the Nigiri Sakura ($28) which is not under the Chef’s recommendation but is a popular choice among diners.

All the sets come with an assortment of sushi, a bowl of fresh salad and miso soup with small pieces of tofu in it, chawan mushi, and 3 pieces of cut fruits. The Osusume and sushi bento sets include a plate of assorted tempura.

When the sets arrived, it was a big spread offering a bit of everything. The sushi was perfectly executed as the rice was firm and had a tinge of sweetness. This is probably due to the Koshihikari rice which the restaurant imported from Japan.

The Osusume lunch set also comes with 4 pieces of sashimi and 2 pieces of grilled fish served together with a piece of Japanese beancurd cake.  The batter which coated the tempura was light and fluffy without any oily taste which was how I liked it to be done.

For the Nigiri Sakura, the set comes with an assortment of sushi. Each of the sushi was beautifully crafted to exude the right amount of wasabi within to complement the tightly rolled rice. As for the nigiri, each piece was from good cuts whether it was the fatty salmon belly or the swordfish. The 2 pieces of battered fried chicken were a little hard on the outside but surprisingly the meat was moist and soft when I sank our teeth in them.

The chawanmushi served here was good as the texture was smooth like silk. It was like a light creamy custard. No chewing was required and it just slipped down the throat.

To round off the meal, I decided to have a scoop of the black sesame or goma ice cream ($3.80 each). The ice cream tasted authentic and the fragrance of the black sesame lingered in my mouth.

For Japanese food, freshness of the ingredients is important. At Tomi Sushi, it does not compromise on the quality of its ingredients and the set meals are certainly value for money.
