While the fashion industry is constantly churning out new styles every season, the industry would not be where it is today without the help of influential fashion icons. In this series of Get That Look, we take a cue from doyennes and trailblazers and recreate their looks with a modern twist.

In keeping with our site’s current theme of Resilience, we take a look at stars whose roots belie the common perception that celebrities grow up with silver spoons in their mouths. In fact, there is a group of underdogs on the scene, whose stories of hardship and challenges have turned out to be the driving force of their success.

Oscar-winning actress, activist and a mother of two, Charlize Theron is definitely one of Hollywood’s certified goddesses. She’s proven to be more than a pretty face, having earned a Golden Globe nomination for her bold yet frightening rendition of serial killer, Aileen Wournos, in Monster, and having taken on similarly-challenging roles in movies such as, The Italian Job, Mad Max: Fury Road and Snow White and the Huntsman.

It is hard to believe but when Theron was only 15-years-old, she witnessed her mother shoot and kill her alcoholic father, after suffering years of emotional abuse at his hands. Theron’s mother served as inspiration throughout her life, imbuing Theron with a confidence and bravery that extends well beyond her career. Theron is an outspoken activist for the rarely-talked-about rape crisis in her native South Africa, and she’s fought to get her campaigns off the ground even as the South African government struggled to pull it off-air.

Theron is chic, bold and sophisticated, and it shows in her sartorial style. Here are the top 3 moments of Charlize Theron.

Charlize Theron’s All-White Look

There is no question that head-to-toe white is a true Summer classic. Theron stunned the red carpet in Berlin, with this clean and basic all-white look. Theron’s choice of fashion and especially her decision to wear a bra as a top was show stopping, simple and yet boldly striking, though she faced searing criticism for it. One thing we can all agree upon however, is the fact that not many 40-somethings can pull off this look and rock a red carpet as well as she did.

The star of the outfit, is a bralette from Dior‘s Spring/Summer 2017 collection. It comes as no surprise that Theron is togged out, head-to-toe in the brand, as she is the face of it’s iconic Dior J’Adore perfume. Match the bold top with an equally fitted bottom. If a figure-hugging mini skirt isn’t quite your thing, Azzedine Alaïa‘s version nips at the waist and flares out from the hips with soft pleats that gently accentuate the curve of the figure. Don’t forget your white stilettos to finish off the ensemble, and to create an extra leg-lengthening look.

Keeping it simple with her makeup, Theron opted for a vibrant red-orange tint, I Desire from Hourglass. Putting on subtle accessories such as Sophie Bille Brahe‘s Petite Perle Pear earring and a white gold diamond bracelet from Suzanne Kalan. Theron shows us that making a statement does not have to be loud.

Charlize Theron’s Leather Pants Look

Leather pants are a fashion staple that will never go away.  Theron’s androgynous take comes in shades of black and navy blue, matched with simple accessories and heels. It is a simple display of chic and class that reminds one of her role as Queen Ravenna, in Snow White and the Huntsman.

The navy blue classic might look simple, but finding a great-fitting coat is not easy. Stella McCartney‘s ‘Bryce’ coat is a timeless treasure. Designed to fit at the shoulder with a neat inverted collar and lapels, the coat will prove to be a worthwhile investment. Polished black trousers are versatile for all occasions. From black ties to a casual day out, Balmain‘s leather pants are ones that you should consider.

Match the pants with an on-trend Boudoir-inspired top, Equipment‘s silk-satin pajama shirt. Once a bedroom staple, the pajama outfit is now also a hot look on the streets. It’s ladylike, yet lends a whole new context to the rock-star trousers. Finish off the look with navy blue stilettos exclusive to Net-A-Porter.  A collaboration between Vetements and iconic shoe designer Manolo Blahnik, these navy blue satin numbers are definitely the key to sprucing up an outfit.

Charlize Theron’s Nude (the colour) Look

Carrying off a pink frock is definitely not the easiest. The shade blends in easily with most skin tones, and if it is not done well, you can look  a lot like a walking house lizard. Seen on Theron, her pale pink get-up for the red carpet of  The Last Face, was yet another effortless home-run. She was voted across papers as “Best Dressed” at the event, cementing her status as reigning queen of the carpet.

From salmon, blush and coral, the saccharine hue is a force to be reckoned with. Although hard to pull off, research have shown that pink has a special mood-boosting quality and there’s no denying that the color has a certain charm to it. It’s time to look into dressing in peachy tones, similar to the Givenchy dress Theron’s wearing. If you can only choose to own one pair of heels, why not let it be a suede sandal? Nicholas Kirkwood‘s black classic is simple with a gold bottom finishing, adding definite elegance to any outfit. Accessorize with a simple black clutch from Theron’s favourite brand: Dior, and polish off the look with a bold lipstick shade. Shocking, from Surratt Beauty may be an intense pink, but its flattering finish will definitely make it a wearable classic.
