In Good Company has collaborated with Columbian paper sculptor, Diana Beltrán Herrera for an installation series of paper sculpted birds, on show at the IN GOOD COMPANY store at Jewel Changi Airport from 16 September until 30 November 2019.

Birds, in all of their majesty and fragility, connect us with the natural world, harbingers of seasonal and environmental change. The installation series features their rendition of a Modern Aviary housing the artist’s paper sculpted birds, creatures so life-like they look ready to take flight.

The Modern Aviary condenses elements of an imagined habitat in vibrantly coloured geometrical abstractions. Sculptural installations of floating shapes and colour tinted perspex are hand-crafted and displayed alongside these life-like but inert creatures—to frame, stage and highlight their form and movements. Diana’s work pays homage to our feathered friends by translating their beautiful plumage and majestic wingspans through the artistry of paper, a celebration of their flights of colour and quiet movements in silent song.

These works highlight the attention to detail required of Diana’s craft and technical skills, characteristic traits that mirror In Good Company’s own design and creation techniques, be it in their clothes or accessories. The installation series coheres around a particular attention to materials and its process of transformation; in this case, the qualities and paradoxical characteristics of paper—flexible and versatile; fragile yet sturdy; stiff in nature but also malleable in application. Crafted entirely by hand, Diana creates each component of the birds out of paper–from their skeletal frame to each individual feather, built and layered upon another, and finally hand-painted to create the gradient tones and iridescent effects of real bird feathers. Finely wrought in detail, it was important for Diana that viewers could get a real experience by looking at these life-like birds.

The species of birds created by Diana include the Eurasian Magpie, Salmon-crested Cockatoo, White-booted Racket Tail Hummingbird, Eurasian Hoopoe, Violet-crowned Woodnymph Hummingbird, and Greater Racket-Tailed Drongo.

These sculptures will be available for sale from 30 November onwards. Prices start from USD $1,500 –USD $2,500.
