I often pass by the row of eateries along Killiney Road but have no time to drop by and try any of them. Some of the eateries are often crowded during lunch time. There is the famous Teck Kee Pau and also the Killiney curry puffs interspersed between these food outlets.

One Thai restaurant, Suanthai, caught my attention so I decided to have lunch there one Sunday afternoon. “Suanthai”, which means “Thai garden”, was started by Mr Steven See in 2005.  He was formerly the General Manager of Thanying, a well-known Thai restaurant.

The joint is not very big but the space is used efficiently, and can easily accommodate 40 over diners. The decor is simple and had the usual Thai decorations and trappings.

What it lacks in terms of poshness, Suanthai compensated in terms of tasty delicious food at very affordable prices.

For example, the Yam Som Oh (Pomelo Salad with prawns, diced shrimps and chilli) was lovely and the portion was big for the price of $10.90. Another appetiser I picked was Tawd Mun Pla or the Thai fish cakes ($8 for 2 pieces) which were bigger than what I would get at other Thai restaurants. They were very delectable too.

For the main dish, I chose one of their signature dishes, the Gaeng Keo Wan Gai (Green Curry with Chicken and eggplants). The curry was just right and the gravy paired well with the Kao Pad Nam Liab (Black Olive Fried Rice with minced chicken and cashew nuts).

I also ordered the Pad Thai (Fried Noodles with chicken and prawns) and I was amazed by the generous portion and the ingredients that gave the dish a tasty appeal.

For desserts, I had the Kao Niaw Mamuang (Sweet Mango served with sticky rice) and the Mun Chiam (Tapioca in sugar syrup). Both were yummy and once again, I was overwhelmed by the sizeable chunks of tapioca.

It was no surprise that the food was extremely good as I later learnt that they were cooked by Thai chefs. This Thai restaurant is rare gem, and with such pocket-friendly prices, I am sure to be back again soon.
